Expanding Action Capacity: An Ecological Approach to S&C, Injury Rehab, and Learning to Move with Pain
Saturday, May 17th, 5pm
Presented by Rob Gray
Join Rob Gray for an exploration of how we can better integrate strength & conditioning with skill development in outdoor, movement-rich sports like trail running and rock climbing. Using the lens of ecological dynamics and Gibson’s theory of affordances, Rob will examine how training environments can be shaped to better reflect the perceptual and physical demands of navigating complex, ever-changing terrain.
Rather than focusing solely on returning injured athletes to their pre-injury state, this talk introduces a shift in rehabilitation: emphasizing the discovery of new movement strategies and action opportunities, especially in the presence of constraints such as pain. This ecological approach encourages athletes to adapt and expand their action capacity—not just recover.
