Holiday time is here again! Woohoooo! I don’t know about you but I love getting into the spirit of the season and all it’s glory of cozy, drinks and sugary treats. It is easy to go overboard so here’s how I stay (somewhat) on track while still enjoying all the goodness this time of year has to offer:
I start my day with a good breakfast of complex carbs, protein and fat.
In one study, women who started their day with eggs instead of bagels automatically ate fewer calories at subsequent meals for the next 36 hours.
Try an omelet or egg scramble with greens and veggies, or if you’re pressed for time make these grab-and-go frittata muffins.
Swap out holiday gatherings based around foods or treats for fun activities
Do a holiday craft, a holiday themed game night or get outside for snow shoeing, sledding or just a snowy hike.
I don’t feel like I have to eat all the treats I am gifted!
I constantly remind myself to eat slowly and enjoy my food.
Skipping meals is not an option for me
This may lead to overeating or succumbing to cravings later (it also makes me happier and less hangry…which, makes everyone happier!)
My car, bag and desk have healthy snacks on hand.
nuts or carrots make a great packable and satiating snack
Setting limits on my splurges by having them on set days helps my resolve to pass up tempting treats everywhere and I don’t feel the least bit guilty for having them when it’s the time for them.
I attempt to de-stress and try to get plenty of sleep (easier said than done!)
And let’s just be honest with ourselves, we’re going to succumb to eating a lot of goodies this time of year. I love to make my own “healthier” goodies! Here are a few of those “healthier” treats to make and take to parties or just indulge in:
Superhero Muffins - put some frosting on these babies and their cupcakes! (gluten-free)
Ginger Molasses Cookies (grain-free, paleo)
Almond Joys (vegan, grain-free, paleo)
Peppermint Patties (vegan, grain-free, paleo)
