Food deserts, cooking at home and being a rebel

Our food system is upside down. The government subsidize large mono crops like wheat, corn and soy and then have to come up with ways to use them. One way the gov has been able to do this is by making us think that tofu, high-fructose corn syrup (it's natural, right?) and whole wheat bread are healthy foods. Grains are pushed as nutritious and essential foods and this is simply wrong.

There is absolutely no biological need for us to consume grains. We can find every vitamin, mineral and micronutrient that grains give us in other more nutrient-dense foods, like vegetables!

The gov also tries to tell us that we need these GMO'd crops to be able to feed our nation...also simply not true. We have a nation full of finely manicured lawns and empty city lots that could easily turn into food producing, community uniting, food desert eliminating micro farms. This will take some effort, of course and initial capital. But why not stop subsidizing those large mono crops and invest in real food?

"The ability to grow, cook, and access quality food is so much more than just an idealized good of urban yuppies; it's literally what sustains people, families, and communities. And being able to do these things can bring both health and economic benefits...
The anwer to the urban poverty and hunger situation is not government programs and food banks, the answer is all those vacant lots in all the parts of the city... (food) that can then be taken by the neighbors into their own kitchens... They turn that into quiche and pot pies and heavy stews, and sell it in the neighborhood, and they satisfy their hunger from the inside out, not the outside in." - Joel Salatin

Not everyone has the time or passion to be an activist for a drastic change in the food system. One simple way you can be a food revolutionary right now is to simply cook at home with real food. This means buying your food in whole forms like vegetables and fruits from the produce section, meats from the butcher and dried beans and other dry goods from the bulk sections. If you want to put a little more effort in, try to buy your food as locally as possible. Buy grass-finished beef and pastured eggs.

"The home-cooked meal indicates a reverence for our bodies' fuel, a respect for biology, and a committed remedial spirit toward all the shenanigans in our industrial, pathogen-laden, nutrient-deficient food-and-farming system."-also Joel Salatin
